Whats the point in the Trophies on the PS3?

Since the PS3 came out with the Trophy support on the PS3, does obtaining trophies it have any point to it? Does it unlock secrets or anything? I’ve been playing Dead Space and have obtained over 20 trophies and I was wondering if the trophies do anything other then comparing them with other people online which, I really don’t get the point of comparing trophies online.
that’s like xbox with the gamerpoints just inspires you to play more

Yeah, what’s the point? They should give us something for trophies.

they just trying to make people more interesting t the games etc. so they dont get bored.

There are rumors that they can be used for discounts at the playstation network store. I haven’t been able to confirm this so if anyone else has knowledge of this let us know.

they are thinking that its gonna be money for thte trophies. like i have 115 trophies, i could have 5 dollars off a 10 dollar game.
im thinking, that its gonna do somthing w/ playstation home. like the trophie room. go to utube and type playstation home trailer

there are many different rumors of what it will do… Sony hasnt come out with statment… but so far its to show up Microsoft that they aint so big… they used there point system to make people buy 360 and whoever have it get the achivements and rub it in… honest to god its true… ive seen to in a ad… see the big thing was GTA IV (360) vs GTA IV (PS3)… "360 exclusive downloadable content and unlock achievments that PS3 will not have" that was from a E3 vid i saw… now PS3 got same achievements and 3 or 4 more… and like i said the rumors say the trophies will actually do something un like 360… so there goes another attack by 360 fans… man I hate Fan boys for both consoles tho… anyways just wait… sony will answer…
